Manufacturer: Red Jacket Firearms

Model: KMP-DI MK1

Caliber: 5.56/.223

Barrel length: 16 inch m4 profile chrome lined barrel

Rate of twist: 1/7

Overall length: 33-36 1/4 inches depending on position of buttstock

Capacity: Comes with one 30 round PMAG magazine

MSRP: $1255.00

Lifetime Warranty

Made in the USA

Many of you may be familiar with Red Jacket Firearms through the show 'Sons of Guns' on the Discovery Channel. Red Jacket is a custom gun building shop in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I was given the opportunity to do a short review on one of the Red Jacket AR's owned by one of our "Gun Show Radio" listeners.

The gun I reviewed was the RJF KMP-MK1 model. This gun comes standard with Magpul furniture, including pistol grip, handguard and six position buttstock and a folding MBUS rear sight. The front sight is a standard AR style sight. The 16 inch barrel is chrome lined and the flash hider on this gun is externally threaded to be able to accept the Red Jacket line of sound suppressors. The gun comes with one Magpul PMAG 30 round magazine and a picatinny rail for mounting optics if desired. A full list of internals and specs on this gun can be found at redjacketfirearms.com. Now let's get to the actual shooting review.

The gun was reviewed alongside a standard Colt M4 style LE model AR for comaparison. The RJF AR was brand new and had not been fired since leaving the factory. We used a variety of ammo during our review. The gun handled great and felt comfortable in my hands, all the controls were easily accessible and the gun felt good and light, approximately six and a half pounds with unloaded magazine. The Colt felt slightly heavier but not a substantial difference. I also noticed the RJF Magpul buttstock came with a 1/4 inch rubber pad that helps keep the gun from slipping when shouldering the firearm. The buttstock also comes with an ambidextrous sling mount that will accept any push button sling swivel. The Colt did not have these two features.

Shooting was a blast and both guns functioned perfectly. No malfunctions of any kind from either gun. The RJF sights did require some minor adjustments but the gun did prove to be accurate and reliable through all of the review. The trigger on the RJF was smooth with a clean break and quick reset, no mushy or gritty feel to the trigger at all. No real noticeable difference between the Colt. We did not do any long range accuracy testing of this gun, all shooting was done inside 30 yards. Recoil was virtually non-existent with this gun.

Conclusion: As stated above the gun handled well and was 100% reliable with all the ammo we used. The six position stock was easy to use and the magpul pistol grip and handguard were comfortable and the magpul back up sight was also a nice addition that comes standard on this gun. The gun comes with a hard chrome firing pin and the upper and lower receivers are forged from 7075-T6 aluminum.
[caption id="attachment_2232" align="alignleft" width="144"] Stacy Bright[/caption]
The magpul stock, grip and handguard do come in 4 different color options and the gun comes in a black plastic hard case. There are a lot of options if you're in the market for an AR right now and this gun is one of many in a competitive price range. Overall I think this is a quality, reliable AR. I would like to thank Karen in Walnut Grove for letting me review this rifle.
