New here so thought it would be appropriate to start a new topic, mosin nagant 91/30 as a cheap alternative for a hunting rifle. 7.62x54r,pretty much good for anything you might run into in the woods anywhere in america. Anybody else out there got Mosinitis?

Mosins are a nice inexpensive option. The SKS used to be the way to go, but those spiked after the 2008 election. Some people do not prefer the recoil of the 54R in the Mosin platform, but it's such a long barreled rifle that it's no worse than a WWII 30-06 rifle.

The safety has been my only gripe with the Mosin. Once you're used to it they're not so bad.

My mosin is a 1934 tula hex receiver that somehow seems to have avoided deployment in any war. That $25 hand select really paid off. Just mounted the brass stacker scout scope with ncstar illuminated 2-7 ler scope. Put 100 rounds down range from 50 to 150 yrds dialed in easy and set at 2x can keep both eyes open and got a zoomed dot sight.

FYI, you can find period correct optics for it as well as mounting capabilities for the kind of optics found on the Dragunov rifles. Feel free to visit http://www.dragunov.net if you'd like some info on the Dragunov rifles and their counterparts.

Sounds like you're already falling for the Mosin. There are folks that have started modifying these to the point that the mods get as costly as modifying a Remington 700. Personally, the only real upgrade it needs is the bolt handle being corrected. If the action and safety on yours is tight you'll know exactly what I mean.

Got the brass stacker scout scope mount, ncstar ler illuminated 2-7 scope refinished it and and Chinese made pistol grip. $120 hand select for rifle,$60 for mount,$60 for scope.$10 for pistol grip(takes care of parallax proplems, proper line of sight. $10 to refinish. Took a spring out of a toogle bolt for a trigger slack spring,$ .40 and shimmed the trigger assembly with a few layers of aluminum from a beer can, free, beer cans were allready here.
Done. $260.40 rifle , I would put it up against most .308 or 30/06 that cost way more and win the bet.
